Exodus Haute Route Trek July 2003

Day 1 England to Les Praz

It was far too early on a Sunday morning when I arrived at Heathrow but it was not difficult to identify some of the other members of the trip. They had their walking boots on (as Exodus recommended) and were concentrating on buying as much whisky as possible. These were the Solihull Seven and I felt immediately at home!

There were other men around with boots on, but they were all tall, young, fit and superbly confident so they were obviously proper climbers destined for the Mt Blanc summit.

I looked around in vain for our leader but he kept his head down until Geneva. Magnus turned out to be that quiet very young man I had noticed in the waiting room and had assumed was just out of college. He seemed slightly taken aback when the Solihull Seven started drinking their whisky on the coach. Auntie Pat was at pains to point out it was required to stop the dry cough which seemed to afflict them almost continuously.

La Mer de Glace campsite at Les Praz. A bit too near the heliport for comfort. We did tent drill and met Phip our Aussie cook

Area map showing the campsite and my afternoon walk. Good views of the valley and bit of rock to climb. Click on the map for a more general view of the area.

Then a convivial meal meal outside in the centre of Les Praz with superb views of the sunset on Mt Blanc.
