Exodus Haute Route Trek July 2003

Day 14 Zermatt and the Matterhorn

There was no question about today's trip, it was the Kleiner Matterhorn cable car and then on to the Breithorn. Freddie's taxi took Bruce, Sixto, Trev Jackie and I through Täsch, which is one huge car park, to traffic free Zermatt. Straight up to the top of the Kleiner Matterhorn (3883m). The weather was perfect and the view supreme. The Matterhorn, the Weishorn and the Breithorn were all wonderful.

We went down onto the snow. There was still some skiing going on although it didn't look very exciting. We followed the steady trail of people going up the Breithorn. Bruce raced ahead as though he was walking in the Lakes. It got steeper and steeper with more ice and by the time we reached the Bergschirm we realised that without crampons and ice axe it was a bit foolish. The crevasse at the bergschirm was impressive. Back to the Kleiner Matterhorn with Jackie to take some more pictures. The cloud was coming up from the valleys now and covering the Matterhorn. We went down to the mid station called Trockener Steg and enjoyed the sun and a different view. Finally had a look round Zermatt visiting the churchyard, admired the wide variety of people and attire and picked up some souvenirs. The last meal in the campsite restaurant turn into a big booze up. Pete and Bruce both made witty speeches and we presented Magnus and Phip with chocolate Matterhorns. The night was clear with wonderful stars and Bruce bivied out again.

There are lots of slides so I've put them separately. Here we are at the top of the Kleiner Matterhorn. Click on the picture to see the rest.

Exodus Trip Notes

Day 14 From Randa it is a short train or minibus trip (optional) to Zermatt. Being traffic-free, Zermatt is an ideal place for a free day: there are lots of opportunities for short or long walks in the locality, or one can simply relax in town. There are also lots of optional excursions: for example by mountain cog railway to Gornergrat and then by cable car to Stockhom for views of Monte Rosa. Perhaps the most spectacular however is the cable car ascent to Kleine Matterhorn. Using this optional cable car, those who wish may ascend to the peak at 3,883 m. The all round views here are exceptional, including close-ups of the Matterhorn
and Breithorn.
