Exodus Haute Route Trek July 2003

Day 6 Champex to Cabane de MontFort

Walked down past the completely still Champex Lake and on down the valley to Sembrancher. Good views across the Rhone valley. Brilliant hot sunny day but my ankle was very sore.

Took the Grand St Bernard train and a bus to Verbier. We lounged around in town waiting for the shops to open and then took the cable car and walked along a sunney terrace with superb views of the Grand Combin, to the Cabane de Montfort. This was newly refurbished large hut, more like a hotel, with a gleaming copper roof and showers! Drank beer on the sunny terrace, had a good meal and watched the sun go down. Mt Blanc was just visible on the horizon.

Exodus Trip Notes

Day 6 From Champex we walk down to Sembrancher (717 m.) then travel by train and bus to the ski resort of Verbier (1490m.) from where we ascend to reach our first mountain hut, Cabane de Montfort (2457m.)
Mountain huts have shared dormitory style accommodation and basic toilet and washing facilities only. The support vehicle is unable to reach this hut so we need to do some light backpacking until we rejoin it tomorrow.

Mountain hut.
